Training A Labrador Retriever To Fetch

Trying to train your Labrador retriever to do a fetch command? Here are a few tips to help you accomplish that.

Step 1

Deciding what object you want to be retrieved is the first step. You can make it easier for your dog if you use an object that is easier to carry, easier for you to throw and easily recognizable. You can introduce this object during your Labrador retriever’s playtime. You can also start by rewarding the dog for simply interacting and playing with it.

Step 2

During the dog’s interaction with the object you may proceed in throwing the object a good distance away. Say the fetch command you are doing this. In the event that the dog runs for the object and seems no plan of returning it, then you can issue the “come” command. If he does return with the object, reward the dog with a treat to reinforce the action.

Step 3

In the event that the dog will not return the object you when you grow it away, he may be thinking that you are playing a game of “keep away”. The best way to solve this is not to chase the dog nor interact with them. Completely ignore the dog; it will soon realize that you are not playing the game “keep away”, and will most likely return to you to elicit some attention. Give him ample praise if it does, and give him even more praise and treat if it returns with the object.
