How to House Train Your Labrador Retriever Puppy

How to House Train Your Labrador Retriever Puppy

It is not a difficult process to train your Labrador puppy if you follow some simple instructions and spend a little time with your puppy. It is important to begin this training as early as possible so that your Lab doesn’t acquire any bad habits of urinating in your home!

One of the first steps to training your puppy is to control when he eats. Do not free-feed your Lab until he is house trained or you will be in store for accidents. It is also important to choose a designated area to allow your pet to use the bathroom. Choose one spot and stick to that spot so that your puppy will know when he reaches that area that it is time to go to the bathroom.

Your puppy will have accidents at first. It is important to say, “No”, but don’t yell loudly or ever hit your puppy! If you are consistent, accidents will begin to happen less and less and before you know it, your Lab will be trained. Most puppies will be able to hold going to the bathroom for at least eight hours at night. During the day, you will need to take him out at regularly scheduled intervals to ensure proper training.

With consistency in training, your puppy should be trained in approximately two to three weeks. This can vary from puppy to puppy so be patient. You may be lucky and your little friend is a quick learner and masters house training faster!
